Using the phonetically-based Sound & Letters Reading Program, best practices, and Science of Reading Pillars, teachers will gain the skills needed to increase student reading and writing skills.

Lesson Overview

Comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, phonics and phonemic awareness are the five Science of Reading pillars used in the Sounds & Letters Program. Wilson, Orton-Gillingham, Science of Reading, and best practice strategies for reading will be implemented into the curriculum taught. Teams will complete in-class reading activities, assessments and enhanced lesson planning through structured reading strategy application.

Key Benefits

Teachers complete a 10 hour Sounds & Letters PD, which is broken down into two hour time slots. Focus is on The Science of Reading Pillars; Vocabulary, Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Comprehension and Fluency.

 

Classroom assessment activities will be included in every PD lesson. 

 

Teachers will take away a classroom kit of multi-sensory approaches, resources and strategies to use in their classroom to increase student reading and writing skills.

 

Class-time will include customized reading lessons to meet the academic and emotional needs of their learners.

Part 1: Overview of Program & Assessment of DIBELS Letter Name Fluency-Phonics
  • Teachers will learn how to analyze results from DIBELS Letter Name Fluency Assessment.

  • The Alphabetic Principle and Phonetic Strategies will be taught to improve student letter name fluency skills.

  • Assessment aligned In-class activities and supplies will be provided for all participants.

Part 2: Assessment of DIBELS Phonemic Segment Fluency-Phonemic Awareness
  • Teachers will learn the importance of giving this assessment to students, and what strategies students can be taught to increase their phonemic awareness. 

  • Decoding and Encoding techniques will be taught, explored and applied to the classroom reading curriculum.

  • Assessment aligned in-class activities and supplies will be provided.

Part 3: Assessment DIBELS Nonsense Word Fluency-Fluency
  • Teachers will learn the importance of giving this assessment to students, and what strategies students can be taught to increase their own word fluency.

  • Letter-sound relationships will be examined. 

  • Assessment aligned in-class activities and supplies will be provided.

Part 4: Assessment Vocabulary
  • Teachers will learn the importance of giving this assessment to students, and what strategies students can be taught to increase students' reading vocabulary.

  • Key words, nonsense words, high-frequency words and sight words will be defined and applied in a classroom setting. 

  • Assignment aligned In class activities and supplies will be provided.

Part 5: Assessment Comprehension
  • Teachers will learn the importance of giving this assessment to students, and what strategies students can be taught to increase their own reading comprehension.

  • The 5 W’s and COPS strategies will be implemented.

  • Assessment aligned in-class activities and supplies will be provided.
